[q&a] Sarah Jane Haywood from That Sexy Show!

That Sexy Show

That Sexy Show

1. How did you conceive That Sexy Show?

The show’s producer (Peter C. Hayward) and I ran another panel/game show for 18 months, We Should Know Better. It had a different theme each month, and in January we did a “Queer” themed show for Midsumma which was a blast! The event sold out and we got this great review from Yawp Mag:

“The team members are an eclectic bunch. In terms of their sexual identities, some are out and proud, some straight, and some apparently unsure. One thing is certain though: There is no room for homophobia here. The show is a real display of the way in which comedy dispels prejudices, in order to bring people together for a good time.

How often do you utter “analingus” in a social context without seeing the room rapidly empty? Maybe you and I move in different circles, but at We Should Know Better, refreshingly the audience seemed to lean forward in eagerness to hear it again.”

The success of the January show made me realise that there was an audience for a show like That Sexy Show.

Also I’ve long since been obsessed/fascinated with sex. I am equally obsessed with creating safe spaces where you can be yourself, and find interesting/creative ways to connect with others (you can see more on stuff like this at sarahjanehaywood.bandcamp.com the culmination of a songwriting project I did in collaboration with a random selection of people I knew).

As well as my sex-session, earlier this year during the Comedy Festival I realised that comedy often isn’t a safe space for queer, kinky, polyamorous folks – they often find that they might go to a show and then end up being the butt of a lol hate-crime. So I wanted to make a show that was specifically inviting to this audience, where people could come and feel safe and enjoy some ridiculous games and feel like they weren’t a minority.

2. What is the sexiest thing about your team captains?

Jessie has the craziest sex-life of anyone I know. One of our games involves guests giving us personal sex stories, and every time I ask her she has three or four new ones…from the last few days. Last week she told everyone about how her partner wanted to eat steak off of her butt, and before that she told us how she tried to have sex with her partner’s nose.

Lisa-Skye is a bit scary in that Top/Dom kind of way. She files her nails to a point on one hand – deemed the “evil hand” – so that she can inflict pain (obviously in a consenting BDSM way) with the greatest of accuracy and ease. I’ve been at the mercy of those things before and I will tell you it’s like canoodling with a less fatal wolverine who’s been let loose in a colour factory.

3. Most surprising admission from a team member or audience member?

We have had some amazing stories on the show so far, a couple that stick out at the moment are:

One guest admitted that when she wanted to feel nasty she would masturbate thinking about Tony Abbott, it was hilarious and I loved her reasoning that “at least while I’m fucking him he’s not out fucking the country!”

One of the most beautiful stories so far was from last week, where a guest talked about how they realised that their partner was “the one” when he was pulling an impacted tampon out of her with a spoon. She said she looked at his concentration face and thought “this is trust, right here”

4. Will audiences be aroused, squicked out or both?

It depends on how open-minded they are! We don’t really hold back – we show pornographic films, our guests often discuss their sex lives in extremely intimate detail, and we are as kink-friendly as is humanly possible. No matter how unconventional your kink may be, we want That Sexy Show to be the place where you can talk about it without any fear of judgement.

So if our audience is sex-positive, open to unusual kinks and don’t mind hearing details about what some describe as “naughty bits”, they’ll have a blast. If not, they might be squicked out…but we’re pretty sure that everyone will learn something.

5. Top 5 reasons to come along and see the show.

1) It’s hilarious. Watching comedians make images of porn “safe for work”, hearing them try to tell convincing lies about their sexual past, and getting to see the funniest porno scenes we’ve been able to find…it’s the sexiest laugh-time you’ll ever have.

2) We always have super amazing guests with pornstars and sex therapists alongside Melbourne’s best alternative comedians and theatre-makers! (Check facebook for the lineup – facebook.com/ThatSexyShow)

3) You are guaranteed to learn something.

4) All three of our regulars are super-babing hot chicks, and who doesn’t want to see that?

5) To support a space that tries to be funny, educational, and provide voices you don’t normally hear with a chance to tell their stories!

(6: we often spend a fair chunk of time talking about the ridiculous sex advice Cosmopolitan Mag dishes out, cause god, that stuff is not safe for human consumption, if you think Cosmo’s sex advice is often socially irresponsible, come share that view with us!)

Last show of the season is on TONIGHT! GET TO IT, Melbourne!!

[q&a] Amy Middleton, Archer Magazine

Today, there is cause for celebration in Australia, for today is the day that Archer successfully hit its crowdfunding target. I was lucky enough to grab Amy Middleton, the founding editor of Archer, for a quick ‘n’ dirty Q&A:

Amy Middleton, Founding Editor of Archer Magazine

Amy Middleton, Founding Editor of Archer Magazine

Archer, Australia’s first magazine focusing on sexuality and sexual diversity has *just* successfully completed its Pozible campaign. A massive congratulations to all involved, how are you feeling?

Thank you! I’m feeling elated, relieved and excited. And grateful that my mates didn’t un-friend me on Facebook for my incessant posting!

What prompted you to create Archer? Why the need for a magazine like this? And where did the name come from?

Archer came about out of my own desire for a single Australian media source that covers issues pertaining to the sexual equality movement. I’ve been a journalist for a long time, so when I had that thought, I felt compelled to create something. I mostly wanted to make a collection of writing and photography that would act as a relic of its time in terms of our attitudes to sexuality and diversity. Something we could look back on and see how things had shifted.

The name has personal and general significance. Generally speaking, an archer’s job is to get to the point, and keep his or her eye on the prize. It is a symbol of concentration, strength and resilience. Personally, it refers to an heirloom in my family – an art deco statue of a naked woman with a bow and arrow. In that sense, it represents freedom and art, and a combination of masculinity and femininity.

Besides yourself, who else is on the team? Where did you find them?

Where did I find them? As though I stumbled upon them in the forest! We are a team of five.

Felipe Ubilla, one of two designers working on Archer’s first issue, is a layout artist I used to work with at Bauer Media. I knew he would be into this project, as he loves creativity and new media. An old friend and colleague of his, Kyran Docker, rounds out the design team.

Alexis Desaulniers-Lea is a Canadian-born photographer who I selected as my image curator after posting an ad online. She is amazingly passionate and committed, and has a great eye for images. My sister, Jessica Jean, is our social media admin. She has a killer concentration span and an eye for hashtags.

I know you probably haven’t had time for much reflection, but how have you found the crowdfunding experience? It must be an interesting feeling to know that people believe in this project enough to raise over $20,000 to see it come to life!

It has been really humbling, particularly the contributions from my friends and family. The process was also crucial to the mag’s production; the costs involved in printing a magazine are huge, so 200-odd people paying in advance for their copies of Archer is a very convenient model. The other upside is exposure – it’s a good opportunity to create a community around the title ahead of its launch.

I understand that the first issue is mostly locked and loaded – what will we can expect to see and read in Archer’s debut issue?

The mag is about diversity, so the topics and their writers are diverse. Our high-profile writer is Christos Tsiolkas; he has written a beautiful and honest piece in which he speaks up about a form of desire that people don’t usually talk about – that will be the most challenging article for readers. 11 other Australian writers, ranging from a press gallery member to a motorcycle journalist, cover nudism, sex and censorship in Australian film, etiquette in urban beats, the experience of a transgender man, the history of queer media, and of course, marriage equality.

Are there going to be any topics that are too taboo for Archer?

Hasn’t happened yet… although I have toned down the language in a couple of articles. I’m not sure that anything is too taboo if it’s framed in the right way. But ask me again in 12 months!

When and where can we buy the first issue?

The first chance to buy Archer will be at the launch party in Melbourne. It’s going to be fun! Watch our social networks over the next couple of weeks for details.

[review] Tantus Tsunami

Tsunami by Tantus in Purple Haze

Tsunami by Tantus (L-R: Strawberry, Purple Haze, Midnight Purple)

So, the good folk over at Tantus sent me the Tsunami to try out and report back on. I’ve been in busyland, and playtime has been limited, so it’s taken me a while to get well-acquainted enough with this toy to feel competent enough to write this review. I like to use a toy a few times, in a few different ways before I think I am qualified to have much of an opinion on it. Sometimes there is a learning curve or sometimes what seems super fantastico is actually pretty ‘meh’ after one or two rounds with it. I’m pretty pleased that the Tsunami has gone the opposite way, and has become better with each use.

How is that so? I guess I experienced a bit of a learning curve with the curves of this toy. <- WORD PLAY. Ahem. As you can see in the above picture, the Tsunami is named as such because of its big wave-like texturey curves and g-spot leanin’ ‘head’. If you use this toy shallowly, you can get into a pretty sweet rhythm bumping the head against the g-spot and the lower texturing against the clit. Provided you have a liberal amount of lubricant in the picture, this feels quite nice. The Tsunami has a removable bullet hole, so once you pop in the 3-speed Tantus Bullet (a little on the noisy side, but pleasant enough in strength) or, if you are a power-hungry but noise-conscious monster like me, your We-Vibe Tango/Salsa bullet, then hey presto! Your dildo just became a vibrator. Now repeat the poorly-described shallow head-against-g-spot and ridgey curves against clit action and you’ll probably end up in ejaculation and/or orgasm town. Lord knows I did.

Made of a shiny, medical-grade silicone, my Tantus Tsunami is in ‘purple haze’, which is the lighter purple in the middle of the image. You can also select it in a dark purple or strawberry, if that is to your liking. The toy is soft but firm, so there should be no discomfort or pain caused by the hardness of the toy. Because the bullet vibrator is removable, the toy can be washed or even sterilised, which is good for those of us who like to share toys sans-condoms!

Note: The way the bullet hole has been designed means that there is excellent grip on your bullet vibe so it won’t slip out. Further note:  This can result in a frustrating bullet removal experience. If your question is ‘Lauren, did you get seen by people in the street with your teeth gripped around your We-Vibe Tango, desperately trying to wrench it out of the dildo with your face?’ the answer is DON’T YOU JUDGE ME. Seriously though, you might want to lube up that bullet a little before inserting it, so you don’t have weird dildo face at your window, too.

The base is entirely harness compatible, and will work with most standard o-rings/harnesses. The base also makes it safe for anal play, and whilst I haven’t tested it out on any butts yet, I reckon this would also be a pleasurable p-spot (prostate) stimulator. If you have a prostate and have experienced the waves of joy the Tsunami can bring (MORE WORDPLAY. POTENTIALLY TOO SOON WORDPLAY), go ahead and tell us about that anonymously in the comments!

Getting back to vaginal use of this toy – when used a little more deeply, the waves along the shaft of the Tsunami stimulate the g-spot as well, and this is where the softness of the toy can really come into its own, especially if you have ever used a curved and textured toy that ‘hooks’ against your bones, causing discomfort or pain or loud yelping irritation. Sans-harness, you get 6.75″ of insertable length (about 17cm), but remember that you’ll lose a little length with a harness. Of course, Tantus have been clever enough to not start texturing the toy until a little further up the shaft to allow for comfortable and unobstructed harness use.

Aesthetically, the Tsunami is one of the more pleasing toys I own now. All resplendent in its shiny light purple, the faintest hint of shimmer. Look at how it shines in the morning light. Also, whilst you are there, look at how readily it collects lint and dust. Invest in a good storage bag, or store it in the simple plastic packaging the toy comes in, if that is your style. This photo was taken on my Samsung Galaxy S3, and before I had had any coffee, so apologies for the questionable quality.

Tantus Tsunami on Moleskine

Tantus Tsunami on Moleskine

At the end of the day, I reckon this is a lovely toy, and I would totally recommend it. It wasn’t mind-blowing or revolutionary, but it is beautifully designed and crafted, and Tantus are an all-round kick arse company who I like supporting. This is a body-safe toy made by people who want to ensure you experience wave after wave of pleasure.

WATER PUNS. I’m out.

[events] Courtney Trouble is coming to town; it’s time to talk about feminist porn!

I have been a massive Courtney Trouble fan for some time now, her riot grrrl attitude to making porn was refreshing and her body positivity and dedication to the representation of queer, trans*, fat and other marginalised people’s authentic sexualities in pornography is nothing short of inspiring. So, you can imagine my delight when Courtney Trouble agreed to come to Melbourne for two nights of special events!

I am so pleased to announce that Harlot Overdrive will be presenting both of these upcoming events:

Courtney Trouble is the founder of TROUBLEfilms, IndiePornRevolution.Com, and QueerPorn.TV, as well of the director of 14 full-length films, including the Reel Queer Production line through Good Releasing and 3 films through thier own line at TROUBLEfilms. For current releases, please see TROUBLEfilms.Com

Queer Porn Icon Courtney Trouble has been producing, directing, and performing in Queer Porn since 2002, and is responsible for coining the term “Queer Porn” as a genre in the mainstream industry. Nominated for 7 AVN Awards, and winner of 5 Feminist Porn Awards, Courtney Trouble’s films speak to an extremely fluid, authentic, and hardcore version of graphic sexual imagery.

Courtney Trouble’s films, like Fuckstyles, Seven Minutes In Heaven: Coming Out!, Billy Castro Does The Mission, and the Roulette series, have become the new standard in queer porn.  They feature performers that run the gamut of fame, gender, and sexual orientation, such as Jiz Lee, Wolf Hudson, Dylan Ryan, Lorelei Lee, Syd Blakovich and Madison Young.

She has successfully mixed her lo-fi “do-it-yourself” indie-art aesthetic with an accessible, understandable, yet female-forward porn formula that the average porn consumer (whoever that is!) as well as the subversive, political, and inquisitive crowd can enjoy.

She started NoFauxxx.Com as a 19 year old photographer and web designer, with the purpose of creating an indie porn site that was authentic, empowering, and all-inclusive. She wanted it to break stereotypes in the adult industry, and act as a tool for ladies, queers, and artists, to explore the erotic and sexual side of creativity. She soon found herself as one of the founders of the queer porn movement, setting the stage for all that was to come..

[review] LELO SmartWand (Large)

LELO Smart Wands are LELO’s answer to the long-time favourite wand vibrators. Sorry, *massagers* (wink, wink, nudge, etc). It kinda all started with the Hitachi Magic Wand, and now we have a whole lotta wand styled toys with the vibrations and pulsations and attachments and way-hey-hey!

LELO Smart Wand (in ivory)

LELO Smart Wand (in ivory)

So LELO were like, people love the Hitachi but aren’t enamoured with being tethered to the power point while they jack it, so we gotta make this cordless. But the vibrations still need to knock your socks off, because these toys are coveted by those of us who like it STRONG and able to last for AGES. They totally achieved that goal, too. Whilst perhaps not quite as strong as their AC-powered counterparts, the large Smart Wand still packs enough of a wallop to satisfy most discerning power-fiends (the Smart Wand also comes in a smaller size for those who like the idea of a portable wand or don’t need/want the great hulking large wand getting all up in their business).

It even has a clever SenseTouch sensor that knows when you are making contact with the toy and ramps up the intensity accordingly. Plus the standard array of 8-odd variations in the vibrating patterns that we’ve come to expect from quality sex toys.

Plus, aside from going gangbusters on the clit (seriously, it’s like purchasing a ticket to ride the express train to Orgasm Town), this is legitimately good as a massager for working out knots and pain in one’s body. I could hold it against my shoulders and back with ease, and it is light enough that this didn’t result in the heartbreak of Tired Hand Syndrome.

Quick and easy to charge and an included neoprene storage bag (that kinda looks like a cute sleeping bag for the toy) and total waterproofing are all icing on the cake of this stylish, Red Dot award winning toy.

At least, in theory.

LELO Smart Wand (in plum)

What even is all this colour-matched swag?

I work in the sex toy retail industry (but all views on Harlot Overdrive are my own and do not reflect that of my employers or colleagues) and became a little dismayed that there were some whispers about the toy not working so well when it was used in water, despite LELO’s guarantee that the toy is waterproof. Indeed, even when I tweeted about this they stood by that claim and didn’t offer any idea of what the discrepancy could be about.
So, being the sensible and curious pervert that I am, I ventured to the warm bath with my Smart Wand to see just how waterproof it was. I risked a very beautiful, pricey and until that point, flawless toy in the name of science. For you. You’re welcome, world.

Conclusion? I loved my Smart Wand.

Yes. Loved. Past tense. That was intentional, not just sloppy editing. My beautiful, large Smart Wand, all sleek, swank and equal parts shiny and silky silicone, had to be returned for a refund.

After about fifteen minutes the fully-charged Smart Wand stopped working. Shortly thereafter, I was standing on the cold tiles, shaking water OUT OF MY SUPPOSEDLY WATERPROOF SMART WAND. Like, there was so much water in the toy that you could shake it gently near your ear and hear it. The Smart Wand was audibly not living up to the continued claim that it was waterproof.

So, after all the dust and trauma was settled, I decided not to replace the Smart Wand with another Smart Wand. Like, this toy is beautiful, but I can buy another non-waterproof cordless, rechargeable wand vibrator for a fraction of the price and still be riding that train to Orgasm Town (and working out those knots and tension in my back). If you own the Smart Wand already, my advice is don’t take it in the bath unless it is still in warranty.

If you don’t own a Smart Wand and the waterproofing is a selling point for you, then make sure you test it out during the warranty period or be like me and get something else from LELO’s extensive range of genuinely beautiful, quality vibrators and stimulators instead.

Google Glass & Porn

Hello lovers and friends,

I have suddenly found myself working a lot of extra shifts on top of my full time study commitments (and a few other little projects that I have in the works) so time has been limited and this blog has been a little quieter than I want it to be (so many rad toys to tell you about, among other things!)

I do however have the time to share this little (SFWish) porno-comedy sketch gem, featuring that Deenage dreamboat, James Deen and the very funny Andi San Dimas (and extra special surprise cameo at the end from, well, probably who you would expect it to be). This is the YouTube-friendly censored version of the video, but you can find the uncensored version over at MiKandi. MiKandi are responsible for the “first and largest” Google adult app store and are also the cats behind the first ever Google Glass Porn (that is, porn featuring Google Glass as opposed to porn made FOR Google Glass, which Google says no to).

Pretty funny, no? Definitely a creative response to Google’s banning of porn for Glass!

Sex Ed Steps in the Right Direction in Victorian Schools

According to Susie O’Brien over at the Herald Sun, the Victorian Education Department (in Victoria, Australia, that is) is developing a program designed to teach adolescents and young teenagers the difference between porn sex and real life sex. The Respectful Relationships Curriculum comes about a decade too late, but better late than never, I suppose.

Teenage Girl With Media

Look Ma, this is where the porn lives now (iStockPhoto).

We’ve known for a while now that in lieu of comprehensive and frank sex education that kids just turn to porn to learn the ins and outs of it all (pun very intentional). We know that denying them access to education and/or contraception doesn’t stop them screwing each other. We know that when they are learning about sex in non educational-settings, the information is not coming with a handbook on how to engage with the material.

As any reader of this blog should know, I love pornography. There are fantastic film makers who create content that is fun to watch. There are some really amazing, inspiring and ethical pornographic films and sites out there, but that isn’t what most teens are watching. Teenagers are viewing and sharing clips from sites like Redtube and Xtube with little context to go with them. The sort of clips where very tired gender roles are overwhelmingly adhered to and the focus is almost exclusively geared towards his pleasure, not hers.

Cindy Gallop’s fantastic education project Make Love Not Porn is one of the first pro-porn educational sites for young people, and is a fantastic resource for the media-savvy generation of sexually active beings. It acknowledges that you can’t stop children from accessing pornography (even if you block it on your computer with some overpriced Internet Nannying software, you can be sure that they are seeing it on friend’s media devices or on your computer when you are not home because they know how to get around that software you place so much faith in), and doesn’t talk to them like they are idiots. Instead of infantilising these young consumers of adult media, it helps them gain critical thinking skills and teaches them a little more about mutually pleasurable sex. It is a fantastic resource and one every parent should have bookmarked.

Meanwhile, back in Australia, organisations like YEAH! do their bit with educating young people to go out into their communities and educate their peers. Which is fantastic, because kids have long gotten information on sex from their friends and classmates, so arming them with facts and teaching tools is a brilliant initiative. Really though, what I want to see is a country-wide, mandatory, pleasure-inclusive, sexual education curriculum.

According to O’ Brien, the focus of the Education Department’s new curriculum package for Year 8 and Year 9 students (13-15 year olds) is “consent, intimacy, power and respect in their personal relationships”. Fantastic. Those are four key components of healthy, mutually beneficial sexual relationships. Consent is so misunderstood that it is vital we are teaching kids what it is and how it works, but that needs to be going hand in hand with learning about the power differentials between partners and how to be respectful in our sexual interactions with people.

I’m sure it is only a matter or time before some Lovejoy-type starts wowsering about how this will no doubt turn all our children into sex-crazed fiends all on smack and destroying the church with their lusty sins or whatever it is they like to think happens, but to those of us with more considered and pragmatic views on youth sexuality, this seems like a hell of a step in the right direction.

Tantus Discontinues VIP, a Small Piece of The Harlot Dies.

For those who read my top ten wank toys post last month, you’ll probably remember the love I had for the only dildo to make the list, the Tantus VIP. Apparently Tantus like to mock me, because they have now announced they are discontinuing the damn thing!

Tantus VIP

Tantus VIP

However! Thanks to the redonk prices in their clearout section doubled with this months discount code (use CHEAPTHRILLS to get 25% off), you can snag one before they are all gone. The realistic version is GREAT. I highly recommend it.

Full disclosure: the link above is an affiliate link, which means if you buy the toy I’ll get a few bucks, which would be nice. However, even if you don’t want to use my affiliate link because you actually hate me, I still think sticking a VIP in your toybag is worth it.

[review] The Mercy of Strange Men: Erotic Stories

Cover Image: The Mercy of Strange Men: Erotic Stories

Cover Image: The Mercy of Strange Men: Erotic Stories

I need to make it clear that I am not usually in the business of literary review. I’m also not usually in the business of reading erotic fiction; watching porn is more my speed. However, when the utterly charming and multi-talented Aimee Nichols offered to send me her new collection of erotic short stories, I couldn’t exactly say no to that.

When it comes to my sexual fantasies, I’m not one for flowery romances or fantasy settings – I’ve no time for Reginald’s quivering member, as it were. I’m more interested in filthy alleyways and public parks at night, live sex shows and more physical discipline than I would necessarily want in real life. The Mercy Of Strange Men delivers this to me in spades.

Whether Nicols has her characters picking up band members from the Old Bar in Fitzroy for late night whiskey-fuelled threeways or partaking in suburban voyeuristic wanking sessions, she understands how to pace a story to keep you reading as your arousal increases. There were a few times when the dialogue veered close to feeling a little forced, but on the whole it is natural and flowing and worth your while.

The Mercy of Strange Men (from where this collection takes its title) along with The Gospel of Sophie were definite highlights, whilst in Strap-On Sex is So Passe, clichéd drunken discussions of strap-on sex solicited laughter, leading into an exquisitely detailed one night stand.

You can buy your very own digital copy of The Mercy of Strange Men: Erotic Stories in several different formats over at Smashwords, and if you are in Melbourne next month, you can attend the launch of the book at Loop on Saturday 6 July and tell Nichols in person just how fab you think she is. Lord knows that is what I’ll be doing!
